Mas a caricatura de Eça continua a ter actualidade. Voltando ao objetivo d’As Farpas: no opúsculo de apresentação, cujo sucesso obrigou a uma segunda edição, ficamos logo a saber ao que vinham: “Nós não quisemos ser cúmplices na indiferença geral. E aqui começamos, sem azedume e sem cólera, a apontar dia por dia o que poderíamos chamar – o progresso da decadência”. O que seria feito pondo “a galhofa ao serviço da justiça”: “Vamos rir pois. O riso é uma filosofia. Muitas vezes o riso é uma salvação. E em política constitucional, pelo menos, o riso é uma opinião.” “E assim se passa, defronte de um público enojado e indiferente, esta grande farsa que se chama a intriga constitucional. Não deixa de ser curioso serem os que se afirmam liberais os que mais se batem pelos favores do Estado, pelos avales do estado, pelos lucros de negócios garantidos pelo Estado. Os liberais são, os principais corruptores do Estado, porque são os que mais dependem dele. As televisões são o seu meio de atirar areia aos olhos dos crentes para que não vejam o que se passa com os pretensos "acusadores".
