"Everything seems impossible until it is done.” (Nelson Mandela)

"Everything seems impossible until it is done.” (Nelson Mandela) One of my secrets, if we still have secrets, whenever I can, which is almost every night, I wake up in time so it's not yet time to start another day. You can believe, until you try it, that it feels good, or it's even better to practice this posture. “Writing is perhaps the art of cutting words”, a beautiful phrase attributed most of the time to Carlos Drummond de Andrade, but no one knows for sure who said it for the first time. You know those short, simple words that have a huge power? A reflection or thought does not always need to be long to be profound. These short and clever sentences are proof of that. “To others, I give the right to be as they are. I give myself the duty to be better every day.” (Chico Xavier). There are those who say that we have a great important lesson to learn as we grow in height, but we must also grow from within: in life the answers are not just divided into black or white. There are gray areas, that is, there are multiple answers to the same question and there are behaviors and emotions that do not define what we feel in those moments. As René Descartes said: “There are no easy methods for solving difficult problems.” Sometimes it seems very difficult for our wishes to come true. Everyone goes through times that they consider difficult at certain times. It is, perhaps, a way of measuring their determination and dedication and how they are able to deal with these moments and overcome them. “It doesn’t matter how many steps you take back, the important thing is how many steps you take now.” (Chinese Proverb) There is a peculiar magic in realizing that we are no longer the same person from our past, but a person updated with everything we have already experienced. It is not about who we were, but about the evolution of a person we should become. However, we can also consider our dreams as goals to be achieved: thinking about reaching them can make us change our attitude towards facing life. Walt Disney said: “If you can dream it, you can do it……dreams exist to come true.” (All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them)

“In insignificant things a true friend measures himself.” (Camilo Castelo Branco)

“In insignificant things a true friend measures himself.” (Camilo Castelo Branco) As popular saying (current tourist) goes, “sardines are the queen of Portuguese tables in summer.” Sardines are not only part of our cuisine but also our slang and culture. "Each man pulls his own sardines", a phrase used to justify someone who is looking out for their own interests. "A woman and a sardine want each other to be small", a traditional proverb that alludes to the fact that, historically, Portuguese women are known for being short and sardines are tastier when they are small. However, it's funny that in Portugal grilled sardines are called assadas. It's one of my favorite dishes, almost like a treat. Sardines must be roasted on a charcoal grill and must be eaten accompanied by tomato and pepper salad, boiled potatoes (formerly “arebola potatoes!!!) and homemade bread. Then melon or watermelon dessert, a coffee made by Jorge, pastel de nata and an “acieira” brandy over 50 years old. And always in the company of Jorge, Donzília and of course José Carlos Pisco. Finally, this phrase attributed to José Saramago: “Let's not rush, but don't waste time. “

“We always arrive at the place where we are expected.”(José Saramago)

“We always arrive at the place where we are expected.”(José Saramago) In these frantic and hectic times, where commitments and distractions compete for our attention, discovering the importance of savoring every moment of life is a very common search. In general, as Chico Buarque said, “people are afraid of change. What I'm afraid of is that things will never change.” With which we fully agree, as we have reached a level in our lives where we want to be and we know that, as the popular saying goes, “life is two days and one of them is spent sitting down.” There is a Latin expression that many use, “carpem diem”, with the meaning of “seize the day” without knowing its real meaning, which in fact means “seize the day” but to reflect and in practice a reflection of good things , not wanting to refer to “enjoying a specific day”, but meaning “making the most of the NOW, appreciating the present.” Enjoying life is not just about the number of years lived, but about the quality of the moments we create. “Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them - this only creates sadness. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally along the path they take.” (Lao Tzu) Everything has its time. If we feel that we need to change something in your life, being aware of this is a first step, and perhaps this is enough for today. Who knows, maybe tomorrow, the day after tomorrow or the beginning of next week will be the time for the second step necessary to make this change happen. Good things happen to those who wait... Even better things happen to those who get up and go after what they want! Or in the words of Brazilian writer Martha Medeiros, “Each and every change is an advance, a step forward, a boldness that we grant to ourselves, we who fear the unknown so much.” And because today is Camões day, we end with a quote from him. “Times change, desires change………The whole world is made up of change, always taking on new qualities.”

“Don’t try to move the world – take one step first and you will move yourself.” (Platao)

“Don’t try to move the world – take one step first and you will move yourself.” (Platao) The popular voice says that “there is a time when we need to abandon used clothes, which already have the shape of our body,” and forget our paths, which always take us to the same places. It is time for the crossing: and, if we do not dare to do so, we will have remained, forever, on the margins of ourselves. “Change your life today. Don’t leave it for later, do it now, without delay.” (Simone de Beauvoir) In general, people have to have the perception of remembering the past, but living in the present. Memories always remain, but in the present we have to know that the future is being built. Never let the sadness of the past and the uncertainty of the future spoil the joys of our present.” Being happy is not being afraid of your own feelings. It's knowing how to talk about yourself. It is having the courage to hear not". It means having the confidence to receive criticism, even if it is unfair.”(Augusto Cury). All our life changes require persistence and determination. Without these two forces, change cannot happen. Believe in the power of change and take the first step. There is a whole incredible world always ready to be explored. As Epicurus (philosopher of Ancient Greece, the founder of “Epicureanism” – a philosophical system that proclaimed the pleasure obtained through the practice of virtue as the only superior good of man) said: “Happy people remember the past with gratitude, they rejoice. with the present and face the future without fear. “ We must always be aware that our habits sometimes constitute a problem. We just need to be aware of our choices and be responsible for our actions, and remember that “while we dream, we are making a sketch of our future”. ( Charles Chaplin)

( Charles Chaplin)

“What worries me is not the scream of the evil ones. It’s the silence of the good.” (Martin Luther King

“What worries me is not the scream of the evil ones. It’s the silence of the good.” (Martin Luther King) This phrase, attributed to Martin Luther King, came to mind in relation to and in the context of Israel's war against the Palestinian people, on this day in which in Portugal “a holiday of Catholic origin is celebrated – the day of the body of God – perhaps it is the moment for a serious reflection on what has disturbed us in some way, the indignant criticism of the slogan “From the River to the Sea” as being a chant in demonstrations defending the disappearance of Israel, at the same time that Israel is in fact destroying Palestine, massacring children, in one word, genocide. It's not chants, it's hunger, thirst, mutilations, burns, people buried alive, murders, bombs, destruction of houses, museums, libraries, universities, schools, tents, etc. This is what politicians cannot hide from us! In fact, we live in a society where the silence of the innocent strengthens the marginality of the guilty. Another surprising inversion is to call radicals or extremists those who speak out against genocide, against an abominable massacre of children. The images that have been reaching us for months, and not just the latest unbearable images of the attack on the refugee camp in Rafah, are those of thousands of children with burned, decapitated bodies, images so monstrous that they would not even be possible in the most violent gore films. Anyone who reacts to these images and screams for this horror to stop is not a radical or extremist person, they are a human person, who is on the right side of History. It is the radicalism of those who remain silent in the face of this monstrosity that should concern us. We think that neutrality, silence is the moderate attitude towards the world's problems, and, however, silence has dramatic consequences. Silence, explains Ervin Staub, an expert in the psychology of genocide, in the article “The Psychology of Bystanders, Perpetrators and Heroic Helpers” (1993), “emboldens perpetrators, who often interpret silence as support for their policies.” When it comes to genocide and the massacre of children, there are no innocent silences! Silence destroys our consciousness. Who is out there calling for resistance to silence? Whoever goes around takes away our ability to reflect. Just look around…. And we don’t want, as Camilo Castelo Branco said, “silence to be a confession.”

O silêncio vai destruindo a nossa consciência.

“We do not stumble on big mountains, but on small stones.” (Augusto Cury)

“We do not stumble on big mountains, but on small stones.” (Augusto Cury) There are those who say that “life is a play that does not allow for rehearsals. Therefore, we sing, cry, dance, laugh and live intensely, before the curtain closes and the play ends without applause.” (Quote wrongly attributed to Charles Chaplin.) In reality we live in difficult times, and we fully agree, that we are going through times of “human stupidity” (televisions and smartphones are considered the greatest contributions), despite the current youth (at least least until the age of 30) is the one with the most education, which does not mean that “culturally” she is the most evolved. Enjoy the now, don't leave it for later... you may run out of time. We have the perception that this is the case, but due to omission or forgetfulness we do not practice it in our daily lives. How many of us dedicate at least 10 minutes to reading and reflecting every day at the end of the day? Confucius said: “Carry a handful of earth every day and you will make a mountain.” However, we always have time to turn on the television or go to our smartphone and take a look at the various so-called “social networks”! In fact, we all have those moments when we need to stop and think about life! We can never forget that life is made of movement, even when we are still, something is always happening around us.” We can believe that all life will offer us in the future is to repeat what we did yesterday and today. But, if we pay attention, we will realize that no day is the same. We can never let each day seem the same as the last because every day is different, because we are in a constant process of change.” (Paulo Coelho) This comes in reference to an article I read today, “In the most Western mentality, work is not everything. For the Chinese, it often comes first.” in the magazine “Visão” (nº 1629 on pages 26 and 27), and it ends like this. “ The achievements happened when I started to realize that I didn’t want to be a “cool boss”. I wanted to be a boss who generates value, pays good wages and manages to create an expectation of growth for all workers. … It gives me pleasure to do things and feel that they are going well… I want to go far with a good family structure, good friends, good relationships, without stepping over anyone.” And to finish, here is this quote from the Chinese artist Weiwei “If today we know much more than we used to, we end up stuck because we are unable to act. I think this is the big problem in modern society: we think we know too much, but we act too little.”

(citação atribuída erroneamente a Charles Chaplin.)

"Let's not hurry, but let's not waste time either." (José Saramago)

"Let's not hurry, but let's not waste time either." (José Saramago) There are those who say that there is an abyss between what we already think we know and what we need to know, although when we can find many things contained in books, we are always surprised by the reality of things. In fact, we have to admit that as a whole the Things that happen to us are always greater than the sum of the parts that make up these events.” You can never know in advance what people are capable of, you have to wait, give time, time is king, time is the partner who is playing on the other side of the table and has all the cards in his hand. deck, it is up to us to invent the inserts with life...” (José Saramago) In fact, we have to understand that when we create problems we have to find solutions to be able to deal with these problems, and when we find solutions they stop being problems. We believe that even though we are going through difficult times, there are still good things in our lives, even if small... we need to learn to expand our strengths and energies and, from that, not lose hope for a better tomorrow! “I often feel hopeless, but we cannot give up hope. We have to keep a flame burning, even if it is very small, like a candle.” (Ai Weiwei – Chinese artist living in Portugal) Let us be persistent and never forget who we are. Let us recognize our qualities, improve what we consider to be defects and believe in our evolution. Become stronger than all challenges. Let us never stop believing in the power of our determination. She will have to take us further! “The greatest glory of living does not consist in never falling, but in getting back up whenever we do.” (Nelson Mandela.)

(Nelson Mandela.)

“There are five steps to achieving wisdom: silence, listen, remember, go out, study.” (Arabic Proverb)

“There are five steps to achieving wisdom: silence, listen, remember, go out, study.” (Arabic Proverb) Today is one of those days... This will pass... I hope it passes, that it's just one of those days and nothing more... It's just another day when little happens, almost nothing is seen, but a lot is thought! Today is one of those days when all we need is a hug that warms our hearts. Maybe yes maybe not!!! "Never give up to be happy. Always fight for your dreams. Be deeply passionate about life. Because life is an unmissable show.” (Augusto Cury) Sometimes it can be frustrating when others don't seem to hear us and we may assume that our message has not been communicated effectively. However, it is possible that some people do not want to listen to us, no matter how direct or sensible our message is, even if we have repeated it several times. In fact in most cases we should never assume that they don't care. Most of us are distracted by our own thoughts. “The lesson is this: never give up, never, never, never. In nothing. Big or small, important or not. Never give up." (Winston Churchill) Today is just another day... As Albert Einstein said: “Time is an illusion. The only reason time exists is so that everything doesn’t happen at once.” For all these reasons we must increase our level of demand, we cannot expect others to do what we need to do, as this way we will avoid many disappointments. Patience is one of the greatest virtues explored in the phrases of the book “The Art of War”, through it, some decisive victories will come at the right time and with the right reward. “Those who know when to fight and when to wait triumph.” The other day, I read somewhere that: “We must have many more doubts than certainties about almost everything.” However, the only certainties we must have are those related to the importance we attribute to the values we cultivate, that is: ethical sense, respect for others and their cultures and convictions, solidarity, individual freedom and respect for the truth. As Fernando Pessoa said, here in the heteronym better known as “Álvaro de Campos”. “We are the gap between our desire and what the desires of others have made of us.”
