“In insignificant things a true friend measures himself.” (Camilo Castelo Branco) As popular saying (current tourist) goes, “sardines are the queen of Portuguese tables in summer.” Sardines are not only part of our cuisine but also our slang and culture. "Each man pulls his own sardines", a phrase used to justify someone who is looking out for their own interests. "A woman and a sardine want each other to be small", a traditional proverb that alludes to the fact that, historically, Portuguese women are known for being short and sardines are tastier when they are small. However, it's funny that in Portugal grilled sardines are called assadas. It's one of my favorite dishes, almost like a treat. Sardines must be roasted on a charcoal grill and must be eaten accompanied by tomato and pepper salad, boiled potatoes (formerly “arebola potatoes!!!) and homemade bread. Then melon or watermelon dessert, a coffee made by Jorge, pastel de nata and an “acieira” brandy over 50 years old. And always in the company of Jorge, Donzília and of course José Carlos Pisco.
