The “Fourth Age,” a Life with Meaning

The “Fourth Age,” a Life with Meaning Bob Marley once said, “Longing is a feeling that, when it doesn’t fit in the heart, spills out through the eyes.” Having a meaningful life in these times or “phase of life” means maintaining goals, cultivating interests, taking care of physical and emotional health, and preserving family and friendship ties. It also involves recognizing the value of the experience accumulated over the years, putting it at the service of the community and younger generations. In truth, we didn’t say everything we thought, nor what we saw, nor what we felt! Not out of fear, but out of respect for each person’s path… “The true meaning of life often, or almost always, lies in the lessons we learn.” (Albert Einstein). We don’t judge or criticize the actions of others… we learn to accept, and we learn that we don’t need to insist on being seen; everyone has the lenses they are capable of having! We also learn that, when we don’t run away, distance is a form of freedom and respect for others and ourselves! As Aristotle said: "A wise man never says all that he thinks, but always thinks all that he says." In reality, we can say that growing old has been, for us, a privilege that has brought with it experience, knowledge, and a new perspective on life. Our age should not be seen as a period of decline or loss, but as a stage rich in opportunities to continue learning, creating, contributing, and strengthening relationships…. "To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people just exist." (Oscar Wilde) A society that values its elderly is a more humane society. Promoting active aging, combating isolation, and creating conditions so that each person can live with autonomy, dignity, and purpose are responsibilities for all of us. Sometimes we forget what Cora Coralina told us: "What matters in life is not the starting point but the journey. Walking and sowing, in the end you will have what to reap." The "fourth" age can, therefore, be—and in my case, is—a time of serenity, growth, and renewal. I believe that a meaningful life doesn't depend on age, but on the ability to continue finding reasons to learn, love, share, and dream. However, the most important thing is that each person discovers what brings them joy, purpose, and fulfillment. "If we want to progress, we must not want to repeat history, but to make a new history." (Mahatma Gandhi)
