"What would your age be if you didn't know how old you are?" (Confucius)

"What would your age be if you didn't know how old you are?" (Confucius) We all have the perception that respect for the elderly has decreased in today's society, and this is shared by many. Data confirms that age discrimination, or ageism, is a real and structural problem. A study by the World Health Organization (WHO) indicated that 60% of the population believes that the elderly are not respected. As Eça de Queiros said: "Don't be afraid to think differently from others, be afraid to think the same and discover that everyone is wrong." Sometimes we forget that true greatness lies in the ability to treat everyone with equal consideration and respect, but respect should not be confused with tolerance, since no one is obliged to accept everything. A phrase attributed to Oscar Wilde says that, "old people believe everything, middle-aged people suspect everything, young people know everything." Some say, and it's true, that self-esteem is essential at all stages of life. From youth to old age, how we see ourselves influences our health, well-being, and relationships. For many people, aging can be challenging in terms of self-confidence – whether due to physical changes or the loss of some autonomy. But aging can also be synonymous with strength, wisdom, and beauty. Therefore, respect and admire the elderly, because if you are lucky, very lucky indeed, one day you may be one of them. And don't forget that, as Abraham Lincoln said, "In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years."
