“History is the teacher of life.”

“History is the teacher of life.” This phrase is attributed to Marcus Tullius Cicero, Roman senator, philosopher and rhetorician, who lived in the 1st century before Christ, he believed that there was an intimate relationship between virtuous action and examples from the past. Several philosophers have made reference to what we have learned from the past. The philosopher Kierkegaard said: “Life can only be understood looking back, but it can only be lived looking forward.” Another wise man, Confucius, said: “if you want to know the past, examine the present, which is the result; If you want to know the future, examine the present, which is the cause.” The Greek thinker Herodotus, considered the father of History by the philosopher Cicero, argued that it is necessary to "think about the past to understand the present and idealize the future". We must not forget this teaching, otherwise we will lose ourselves in the foam of days or in utopias. (as something that takes the form of an illusion, dream, daydream, or fantasy) Recurrently, there is the belief that history is cyclical, that is, there is a systematic repetition in history. Undeniably, the events that occurred in the past serve as an example and learning for the present life, it should be like that, but as we all know it is not! "Change is the law of life. And those who only look to the past or the present will surely miss the future.” (John Kennedy) Many have already made mistakes by not taking advantage of the lessons of the past, who among us hasn't made mistakes? Both nations and people sometimes forget to look back to learn from successes (which should be imitated) and mistakes (which should be avoided). “In the demands of life, everything is lawful, even the artificial, and the artificial is sometimes the great sacrifice one makes to have the essential.” (Clarice Lispector) Let us keep in mind that, to prepare for a better future, we cannot give up the lessons of the past, although without nostalgia, as things change. The key word is not “forgetfulness” but “adaptation”. As Henry Ford said: “The past serves to highlight our failures and give us directions for progress and development in the future.”

Esta frase é atribuída a Marco Túlio Cícero, senador, filósofo e retórico romano, que viveu no século I antes de Cristo, ele acreditava que havia uma relação íntima entre a acção virtuosa e os exemplos do passado. Vários filósofos fizeram referência ao que aprendemos com o passado. Outro sábio, Confúcio, disse: “se queres conhecer o passado, examina o presente que é o resultado; se queres conhecer o futuro, examina o presente que é a causa“. O pensador grego Heródoto, considerado o pai da História pelo filósofo Cícero, defendia que é preciso "pensar o passado para compreender o presente e idealizar o futuro". Convém não esquecer esse ensinamento, sob pena de nos perdermos na espuma dos dias ou em utopias. (como algo que tem a forma de ilusão, sonho, devaneio ou fantasia) De forma recorrente, encontra-se a crença de que a história é cíclica, ou seja, existe uma repetição sistemática na história. Inegavelmente, os factos ocorridos no passado servem como exemplo e aprendizagem para a vida presente, devia ser assim, mas como todos sabemos não o é!. “A mudança é a lei da vida. E aqueles que apenas olham para o passado ou para o presente irão com certeza perder o futuro.”(John Kennedy) Muitos já erraram por não aproveitar as lições do passado, quem de nós não errou? Tanto nações como pessoas esquecem às vezes de olhar para trás para aprender com os acertos (que devem ser imitados) e com os erros (que devem ser evitados). “Na exigência de vida tudo é lícito, mesmo o artificial, e o artificial é às vezes o grande sacrifício que se faz para se ter o essencial.”(Clarice Lispector) Tenhamos em mente que, para prepararmos um futuro melhor, não podemos abrir mão das lições do passado, embora sem saudosismo, pois as coisas se transformam. A palavra chave não é “esquecimento” e sim “adaptação”. Como disse Henry Ford: ”O passado serve para evidenciar as nossas falhas e dar-nos as indicações para o progresso e desenvolvimento no futuro.”

I was one of the economists who received on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, the “Diploma of Counselor Economist”, awarded by the Order of Economists. “The Order of Economists took this initiative to distinguish economists without any record of disciplinary infraction, and who through their career have contributed in a relevant way to the economic development of Portugal, and in accordance with the principles supported by the Order of Economists, as that is, the recognition by our Order of the effort, the work, the contribution made to companies and institutions by the economists and managers who chose this professional orientation for the course of their lives. More than an individual distinction for each one of us, for the results of our work, which is already significant, we interpret this recognition from the Order also as an encouragement to young people in our country and to all foreigners who choose us to study, to choose the profession of Economist, as it is necessary, useful, represents a net added value for companies and public and private institutions, in addition to having an Order worth belonging to, as it gives prestige to the profession and is a national reference , Upon being distinguished at this Congress of our Order, on October 25, 2023, held in Lisbon at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, with the Honorary title of Economist Counselor and having been chosen by the Order of Economists to represent all colleagues in receiving the Diploma which attests to the Distinction, which allows us to use the Insignia in all solemn ceremonies promoted by the Order of Economists, and to include in our professional signature, the mention of “Advisor Economist”, I would like, on my personal behalf and that of all colleagues, to thank to our Order for this pioneering initiative, and to say to everyone present that we limited ourselves to doing what was our responsibility, which was and is, valuing our profession, honoring the schools where we studied, our origins and contributing to a more Developed in economic terms, without forgetting its social and territorial cohesion. “Ordem dos Economistas entrega “Diploma de Economista Conselheiro” “Recordar para que a memória não se apague”(anónimo). Fui uma dos economistas que recebeu na quarta-feira, dia 25 de Outubro de 2023 o “Diploma de Economista Conselheiro”, atribuído pela Ordem dos Economista. “ A Ordem dos Economistas tomou esta iniciativa de distinguir os economistas sem nenhum registo de infração disciplinar, e que pelo seu percurso tenham contribuído de forma relevante para o desenvolvimento económico de Portugal, e de acordo com os princípios sustentados pela Ordem dos Economistas, já que isto é, o reconhecimento por parte da nossa Ordem do esforço, do trabalho, do contributo dado às empresas e às instituições pelos economistas e gestores que escolheram esta orientação profissional para o percurso das suas vidas.
